Hood Canal is still a spectacular vacation area, packed with incredible scenery, history, wildlife and seafood. You can explore Washington's grandest saltwater fjord, the Hood Canal, sparkling freshwater lakes and the striking Olympic Mountains ... all within about a two-hour drive from anywhere in Western Washington. The main town along this stretch of the Highway 101 loop is Hoodsport, settled in the late 1800's. Still unincorporated, this small town is known as "The Gateway to the Olympic Mountains." Hoodsport is nestled along the Hood Canal and at the base of the Olympics. Here you will find all the amenities you need for your trip. Depending on the time of year, you can shuck a limit of oysters, dig for clams, catch a Dungeness crab, catch a pot full of Hood Canal shrimp or jig for a rock cod. Just a short drive up the hill from Hoodsport takes you to scenic Lake Cushman and beyond, to the many hiking trips in the Olympics. Lake Cushman is a large freshwater lake, which offers fishing, water sports and views that take your breath away. Visitors can use the picnic area, day-use shelter, boat ramp and swimming beach. Several spectacular scuba diving sites await your descent in Hood Canal. Most popular is "Octopus Hole" a shore dive suitable for all skill levelsnear Hoodsport. Any of the local dive shops along Highway 101 can provide information for visiting divers. Zip Codes: Hoodsport 98548; Brinnon 98320; Quilcene 98376. |
