Shelton, Mason CountyÕs largest city, offers a downtown historic walking tour and a Visitor Information Center housed in an authentic little red caboose hosted by the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce. Visit their website at www.sheltonchamber.org. Once almost exclusively known for its economic ties to Simpson Timber Company, Shelton is a timeless, diverse and peaceful little town located along Highway 3 to the east and Highway 101 to the west. Home to 8,000 residents, the town reflects its timber heritage with local industry still centered around lumber and forestry products, Christmas tree farms and shellfish. The popular Oysterfest, held here the first full weekend in October, features an Oystershucking Championship, a Seafood Cookoff, wine tasting and live entertainment. Shelton also offers a movie theater, several art, gift and antique shops and four city parks, including the popular Kneeland Park, located off Highway 3 near the railroad tracks.
Thurston County, the hub of Washington's state government, is home to 147 legislators each year. As the gateway for travel to the Olympic Peninsula and Pacific Beaches, Olympia's front door is the unique Puget Sound waterway. Water related activities include some to the world's best fishing, clam digging and oyster picking. Visit the State Capital Museum to see historical and Indian artifacts. Lacey and Tumwater offer nearby attractions, including shopping and the beautiful Tumwater Falls Park. From July through October, salmon can be seen migrating up the waterways leading from Budd Inlet. Zip codes: Olympia 98501; Lacey 98503
